Louis Theroux has revisited his time with the Westboro Baptist Church with an emotional conversation with Meghan Phelps-Roper.

Meghan and Louis first met while she was a member of the controversial church, who would picket funerals and became known for their offensive picket strategies which included signs declaring ‘God hates f**s’.

Louis has made three documentaries about the Westboro Baptist Church, which was mainly made up of the Phelps family, as their congregation came under strain and many members would leave.

Louis revealed in the documentary that the pair have kept in touch since she left the church, who deemed everyone who was not part of it as going to hell – and took particular aim at the LGBT community, Muslims, US soldiers and those of the Jewish faith.

Speaking to Louis via videolink, Meghan said: ‘It changes over time, you know, the way that the pain feels. But it doesn’t… it changes just because I’m changing.

‘I’m getting older, I’m now a mum, and so I have these memories of my mum coming up all the time now.

‘Sometimes it’ll make me happy and sometimes it’ll make me cry.’

Meghan, the daughter of Shirley Phelps-Roper and granddaughter of founder Fred Phelps, left in 2012, and has now been banned from all contact from her family.

Despite being cut off from her loved ones still in the church, Meghan holds love for her mum, who is now one of the leaders of the controversial church.

‘She’s my mom, it never goes away,’ she said. ‘It’s not the past. It’s now. And that’s incredibly painful. No matter how long it’s been.’

She has since spoken out against their doctrine and work, encouraging others to leave and instead trying to turn her platform into one of hope.

Louis has created three documentaries based on the church; The Most Hated Family in America, America’s Most Hated Family in Crisis, and Surviving America’s Most Hated Family.

Louis Theroux: Life On The Edge is available now on BBC iPlayer.
