Piers Morgan has taken a trip down memory lane in an illuminating and wide-ranging new interview, remembering some of his most epic controversies, arguments and polarising social media moments.
Among several classic Piers moments, the Good Morning Britain star revisited his now-infamous tweet about Greggs’ vegan sausage rolls in the chat – explaining he was actually suffering in bed with flu when when he pressed send.
Suddenly, it makes a little more sense.
Speaking to The Sunday Times, Piers admitted: [I was] bored out of my brains. […] Did I really, really feel in my heart of hearts that the great hill I was to die on was the Greggs vegan sausage roll? No. But was there anything else to get my teeth into at the time? No, not particularly.
‘I like arguing with people, I like controversy, I like being at the centre of a firestorm. But there’s also, for me, now a sense of self-awareness. Looking back on some of my antics through the last few years, I think a lot of it was just blaaaaah.’
The benefit of hindsight.
We wonder what some of the past subjects of Piers’ scorn think of his comments, whether Sam Smith (who Piers suggested came out as non-binary to promote their music) or Meghan Markle (where to start…).
The journalist also spoke about his 2018 tweet mocking James Bond actor Daniel Craig for carrying his daughter Ella in a papoose.
In case you forgot: ‘Oh 007.. not you as well?!!! #papoose #emasculated Bond.’
‘It was daft and sort of pointless and irrelevant in the general scheme of things,’ Piers admitted of the tweet. ‘So I think this [coronavirus] has been a recalibrating crisis in many ways.
‘And one of the good things I hope that comes out of it is that we all calm down a bit, including myself, about stuff that actually we now know is completely insignificant. People fighting endless cultural wars over stuff that I just felt was so unimportant.’
He definitely makes a valid point this time.
