Manchester United are preparing a £20million transfer move for Swansea City and Wales defender Joe Rodon – on the advice of club legend Ryan Giggs.

Rodon has played 46 matches for the Swans since breaking into the first-team in 2018 and made his international debut last year.

Despite Swansea’s mixed season in the Championship – the club are currently 11th, three points off the play-offs – Rodon has impressed and his performances have not got unnoticed.

Wales manager Giggs is a big fan of the 22-year-old and, according to Mirror Sport, the Manchester United great has urged his former club to secure his signature.

It is claimed the Red Devils are now plotting a £20m move for the defender, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to bolster his squad at Old Trafford and the likes of Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo set to leave.

Giggs was influential in Manchester United’s £15m move for Daniel James last summer and the Welshman had quickly established himself as a key member of Solskjaer’s squad before the season was suspended.

Swansea are braced for offers for Rodon and may be tempted to cash in on the highly-rated star, particularly with coronavirus affecting the finances of a number of clubs.

Defending Premier League champions Manchester City are also keeping tabs on Rodon but their rivals United are believed to be leading the race.

Rodon fits the profile of players Solskjaer has targeted since taking over as Red Devils manager and could challenge Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly for the position besides club captain Harry Maguire.

Last week, Giggs likened Wales youngster Rodon to former Manchester United star Gary Pallister.

‘Joe has grown over the last year or so. He is quick. Sometimes you don’t appreciate it,’ Giggs told The Athletic.

‘It was the day after a game and we gave some players running drills, box to box. He was running with someone fast and went past them, effortlessly. I thought, “Oh, I hadn’t seen that .”

‘It made me think a little bit of Gary Pallister. You don’t think of him as quick but when he got going at his peak, he was.

‘When Pally got into the channels, no one out-ran him. So that suits the way I want to play.

‘I want my full-backs high, so if central defenders do have to get out wide and cover those positions, they are comfortable.

‘In possession, Joe shows composure and he’s a good character. I saw him giving the ball away and being unhappy with himself. I liked that.

‘Bit intense but set standards and if he didn’t keep to them, he wasn’t happy with himself.’
