Brantley Gilbert is weighing in on the discussion of gender equality in country music.
Sitting down with ET Canada’s Carlos Bustamante in Oshawa, the singer celebrates his current No. 1 single “What Happens in a Small Town” featuring Canada’s own Lindsay Ell, and reflects on the current state of gender imbalance in the genre.
“It’s been a tough time for females in our genre for a long time,” he admits. “I’m friends with several artists that are female…just incredibly hard workers and extremely talented people, and I want all the good in the world for ’em.”

On his latest chart-topping hit, which features a female artist, Gilbert says it was an incredible feeling to share the success with Ell.
“I’m almost more excited for her than I am for us,” he says. “She’s incredible to work with. And if you know Lindsay at all, her name is synonymous with hard work. Everybody in the business knows she’s a grinder and she’s a great singer, a great entertainer, but she’s an incredible guitar player.”
The singer recalls being “blown away” after seeing Ell play a show at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry and realized they had to work together, telling us, “When Scott Borchetta, the president of our record label, brought her name up for a duet, I was like ‘Oh yeah that’s it.'”
Gilbert is also celebrating another accolade – his latest album Fire and Brimstone reaching the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart, and he explains how faith plays a major part in his music making.
“These albums are chapters in my life and I say I’m the ‘what you see is what you get kind of guy’ and if I don’t include my faith then I’m a bold faced liar,” admits the 35-year-old.
Gilbert continues his “Fire’t Up” tour through May. The full list of tour dates can be found here.
