Large fire rages across moorland in Yorkshire with 10 fire engines at scene

A major fire is burning on Marsden Moor in Yorkshire, with 10 fire engines at the scene.

The blaze can be seen from miles around, with dramatic images showing flames stretching across the hillside.

Crews are using blowers and beaters to try and tackle the fire, which measures around 200 metres by 200 metres.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire is close to Mount Road at Marsden.

They said: ‘We currently have 10 fire engines & specialist units in attendance at a fire on Marsden Moor.

‘There is a lot of smoke in the area and residents are advised to keep doors and windows closed.

This was the scene on Marsden Moor at about 9pm tonight. There are specialist fire crews on the scene.

‘Please avoid travelling through the area.’

They said they were working with Manchester fire service and the Marsden Moor National Trust.

Sharing a video of the blaze, the local National Trust said that the area ‘is home to many of our rare breeding birds as well as important carbon-capturing peat’.

They added that the area has suffered moorland fires twice already this season.

Three days ago, the National Trust tweeted on the anniversary of a devastating moorland fire in the same area.

They said: ‘Two years ago, a devastating fire destroyed 700 hectares of Marsden Moor. It all started from a BBQ and could have been so easily avoided.

‘Right now, our moorlands are very dry. Please leave the BBQ at home. If you see a fire, dial 999.’
