Strictly Come Dancing head judge Shirley Ballas has issued a warning to EastEnders actress Maisie Smith – telling her not to get too cocky so early in the competition.
The actress has been partnered with Gorka Marquez for this year’s series, and is now preparing for the first live show next Saturday.
But, having previously won the Children In Need special with Kevin Clifton last year, Shirley is eager for her to keep her feet on the ground, and not think she’s in for the win just yet.
Speaking to The Sun, she said: ‘I know she won the special but if I was Maisie I wouldn’t take anything for granted because doing one dance is not like doing ten weeks.
‘You’ve got to be there and you’ve got to be full on and you’ve got to go the whole nine yards.
‘You could see the competitive spirit, you could feel it. These people all look like they were at the starting block, ready to move forward.’
Giving her verdict on all the performers for this year’s series, Shirley admitted she was worried about MP Jacqui Smith and Good Morning Britain’s Ranvir Singh, who appeared ‘nervous’ during the first group dance.
However, she added that viewers need to ‘keep an eye on’ musician HRVY, and also Bill Bailey, who pleasantly surprised her with their first efforts on the show.
This weekend saw this year’s contestants pair up with their professional partners – and give their first taste of what’s to come on the dance floor.
On top of making us all feel warm and fuzzy as Strictly season kicked off, the pros treated us to a moving routine that promised being ‘free’ despite the lockdown.
Strictly history is also being made with Nicola Adams and Katya Jones in the show’s first same sex couple.
But viewers were quick to peg Maisie as the ‘obvious’ winner of the show, with Coral putting her as a front runner at 2-1.
Max George, HRVY and Jamie Laing are all behind her at 6-1, with Jacqui looking most likely to go home first with a 50-1 chance of winning.
Strictly Come Dancing airs this Saturday on BBC One.
