Great British Bake Off star Candice Brown has revealed that she will be giving away free meals to disadvantaged schoolchildren.
Following the controversial decision to reject Manchester United star Marcus Rashford’s campaign to extend the free school meal scheme, Candice, 35, has taken to social media, where she announced that her pub will be offering lunches to those in need over the half-term period.
Sharing a statement on Instagram, she wrote: ‘Following the government’s s*** show of a decision this week, we @thegreenmanneversholt will be giving out packed lunches to children of families who need the extra support during half term.
‘The pub is shut Monday and Tuesday but I will be there should you require a lunch. Contact me on here or any social media platform or the pub and pass this on to anyone you think may need it.
‘We will do what we can to help always @marcusrashford #freeschoolmeals.’
Candice later posted a screenshot of a petition calling for an ‘end to child food poverty’ onto her Instagram story, encouraging her followers to sign and share across social media.
It comes after Marcus Rashford vowed not to give up after his campaign was rejected in the Commons earlier this week.
During the debate, Labour had put forward its motion, which would see the free school meals scheme extended over the half-term and Christmas holidays until Easter 2021.
It aimed to help feed 1.4 million disadvantaged children in England with £15-a-week food vouchers.
However, the motion was rejected by 322 votes to 261 – a majority of 61. Only five Tory MPs, out of 323 in the party who voted, rebelled to support the extension.
Following the result, Marcus, 22, wrote on Twitter: ‘Put aside all the noise, the digs, the party politics and let’s focus on the reality.
‘A significant number of children are going to bed tonight not only hungry but feeling like they do not matter because of comments that have been made today.
‘We must stop stigmatising, judging and pointing fingers. Our views are being clouded by political affiliation. This is not politics, this is humanity.’
The footballer urged politicians to ‘unite’, insisting that it is ‘time we worked together’, as he feels child food poverty ‘has the potential to become the greatest pandemic this country has ever faced’.
Conservative MP Caroline Ansell has since quit her junior government role following the decision, being one of the few in her party who rebelled to support the motion.
