Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian lamented ‘a day to forget’ after he conceded seven goals in Sunday’s astonishing defeat against Aston Villa.
The Spaniard, deputising for the injured Alisson Becker, produced a calamitous performance as the reigning Premier League champions surrendered their 100% start to the defence of their title.
Reacting to the defeat on Twitter, the former West Ham star wrote: ‘A day to forget, but we’ll be back stronger.’
Speaking after the game, meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp attempted to absolve Adrian of any blame, despite his error-strewn display.
‘Adrian is a really good goalie,’ said the Liverpool manager. ‘He played 11 games last year, we won all of them.
‘Tonight our goalie was not the problem. The reaction to that first goal was not his problem, it was our problem.’
It is not the first time 33-year-old has cost Klopp’s side while standing in for Alisson.
Adrian was at fault during his side’s Champions League demise against Atletico Madrid earlier this year and Liverpool fans will hope their Brazilian international will have recovered from his injury by the time domestic football resumes in a fortnight’s time.
Speaking about Alisson’s injury before the match, Klopp said: ‘Yesterday an incident in training, really unlucky, two players clashed with each other, one gets up, one doesn’t… that was Ali.
‘We don’t know 100% but it was clear he cannot play today and we have to do further assessment.
‘He’s injured, now we hope it’ll go really quickly, there’s an international break but I’m pretty sure after that he will not be ready and we have to see week by week.’
