Andre Braugher has opened up about Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s police brutality plot, confessing he’s ‘anxious’ over his character’s reaction.

Comedy bosses recently confirmed they would be delving into the issue in future episodes, with co-creator Dan Goor explaining they ‘wanted to make sure we got it right’, after scrapping all the plans they had for season 8.

And, discussing the plot, Andre – who plays Captain Raymond Holt – insisted that it was essential for the show to address the subject.

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine has to commit itself, as a comedy, to telling the story of how these things happen, and what’s possible to deal with them,’ he said. ‘Can you tell the same story? Can anyone in America maintain any kind of innocence about what police departments are capable of?’

Chatting to Variety, Andre also revealed he was interested in how his on-screen counter-part will react to the heavy discussion, after he previously advised Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) not to file a police report over a racist officer – in season four episode, Moo Moo.

‘It might mean that Holt is a staunch defender of the NYPD, or that he tries to burn the whole thing down,’ he continued. ‘I know that he is a pragmatic man; I do know that he’s a loving, [if] robotic person. I’m anxious to see what that’s all about, and I have no idea what Season 8 of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is going to be, because everything’s changed.

‘Can a comedy sustain the things that we’re trying to talk about? I don’t know. It could be a really groundbreaking season that we’re all going to be very, very proud of, or we’re going to fall flat on our face.’

‘But I think this is a staff, a cast and a crew that’s willing to take it on and give it our best,’ he added. ‘I think we have a damn good chance to tell the kinds of stories that heretofore have only been seen on grittier shows.’

Andre’s words come after Terry revealed writers had scrapped their plans for season 8 over the current Black Lives Matter protests taking place across the world, following the death of George Floyd.

Speaking about the plots they will be working with, he told Access Hollywood: ’We’ve had a lot of somber talks about it and deep conversations and we hope through this we’re going to make something that will be truly groundbreaking this year.

‘We have an opportunity and we plan to use it in the best way possible.

‘Our show-runner Dan Goor, they had four episodes all ready to go and they just threw them in the trash. ‘We have to start over. Right now we don’t know which direction it’s going to go in.’

Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-6 are available to stream on Netflix.
