Third-placed Man Utd need multiple signings to finish third, reckons Gary Neville

Manchester United may be third in the Premier League table with one game to play, but Gary Neville reckons they need three or four signings to have a chance of finishing third next year.

The Red Devils need a victory over Leicester on the final day of the season on Sunday to confirm third place in the Premier League table, although a draw could prove to be enough if Chelsea don’t beat Wolves.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have not been beaten in the Premier League since January, but Neville believes he needs to make at least three more signings to progress.

Not only does the former England international not see this squad challenging for the title next season, but he doesn’t even think they could make it to third without ‘three or four’ additions.

“I don’t think this Manchester United team at this moment can challenge for the title next season,’ Neville told Sky Sports. ‘It needs more additions and more of the right additions.

‘To be fair to Ole, in the time he has been at the club, I think the players he has brought in have improved his team enormously.

‘I think that he needs three or four more of those as a minimum before he can even think about getting up into third or second place.’

Neville has insisted that it is not necessarily improvements to the starting XI that are needed, but he wants to see United have multiple top class options in every position.

The former full-back has regularly called for Solskjaer to add another centre-forward to his ranks, but he could still see Anthony Martial hold onto that role next season.

‘My concern isn’t really for the front three or the midfield three, it’s the depth and the drop that you have beneath that talent,’ Neville continued.

‘When I say that Manchester United need a centre-forward, that’s not me saying they should sell Anthony Martial.

‘They need a centre-forward because Manchester United should have two or three great centre-forwards.

‘They should have two or three great wingers. Not just one in each position.’

The Red Devils go into the final game of the season level on points with Chelsea, who are behind them in fourth on goal difference.

Leicester are one point behind both teams and host United on Sunday in a winner takes all contest in the race for the Champions League.
