Mike Tyson is not so sure he won’t be going for the knockout in his exhibition bout with Roy Jones Jr, despite suggestions to the contrary from the California State Athletic Commission.
Tyson and Jones Jr will box an eight-round exhibition on 12 September in a remarkable return to the ring for the two legends.
It has been 15 years since Tyson’s last pro fight, and while Jones Jr fought just two years ago, he is also well past his prime at 51-years-old, although not quite as far as Iron Mike at 54.
Due to the veteran status of the former world champions, there appeared to have been an agreement that they would not be punching at full power and it would be more of a competitive spar, at best, as confirmed by Andy Foster, the executive director of the California State Athletic Commission.
‘This isn’t a situation where they’re going out there to try to take each other’s heads off,’ Foster told Yahoo Sports. ‘They’re just going to be in there moving around the ring and letting fans see these legends.’
That plan doesn’t seem to tally with the fighting style of the Baddest Man on the Planet, even at 54-years-old, and Tyson has indeed questioned his ability to conduct a tame affair.
When asked if it would be a pedal to the metal affair by TMZ, Iron Mike replied: ‘Listen, anybody that knows me, I don’t know how to put any pedal, I only know one way of fighting and that’s just what it is.’
Tyson may receive a hefty pay cheque for his efforts against Jones Jr, but he will be giving it all to charity, and he feels he has found a new calling in trying to help others.
‘Now I’m doing it with a lot more enthusiasm because now I’m doing it for someone else,’ continued Iron Mike.
‘All my life I thought loving yourself was buying myself a great house, car or a boat or having a beautiful girl.
‘I found out that real love is helping people and being kind and considerate.
‘That’s what I want to do. I’m not saying I’m the greatest guy in the world, and I’m kind and all that stuff.
‘But I want to embark on this lifestyle and this is where I’m at.’
