BBC drama A Suitable Boy began tonight, kick-starting our brand new Sunday night obsession.

The six-part series, which is based on Vikram Seth’s bestseller of the same name, takes place in a newly independent India in 1951 and follows student Lata Mehra (played by Tanya Maniktala).

Lata is looking towards her own future and isn’t at all interested in romance – until she begins to fall for a mysterious fellow student Kabir Durrani (Danesh Razvi).

Meanwhile, religious tensions rise between Muslims and Hindus in the wake of Partition, as India’s first national democratic election approaches.

The first episode was packed full of introductions, potential romances and drama, and we’ve got a load of questions that need answering as the series continues.

Will  Lata Mehra pursue a romance with Kabir Durrani?

Lata fell head over heels with Kabir pretty quickly in tonight’s scenes, but after discovering his surname she’s been left devastated by one major problem: he’s Muslim and she’s Hindu.

As Shakespeare said, the course of true love never did run smooth…

If Lata decides to pursue a relationship with Kabir there could be huge repercussions for both parties, such as bringing shame on the family.

Will Lata choose to follow her heart, or will she throw in the towel and wait for her mother to find her a suitable partner to marry?

Will Saeeda Bai and Maan Kapoor embark on a relationship?

While Lata has fallen in love, Maan Kapoor has also met the partner of his dreams.

Electric scenes saw Maan woo courtesan and musician Saeeda Bai, and the episode ended with the couple in bed.

This potential romance could cause problems for Maan, who happens to be the son of a prominent politician.

Will the couple embark on a relationship, or will they keep things strictly business?

How will the tensions between India and Pakistan unfold?

A Suitable Boy is set following the partition of India and Pakistan as India prepares for its first independent election.

The first episode set the scenes and demonstrated the tensions between the two countries, with a bloodbath at the town’s square taking place before the credits rolled up.

How will the brewing tensions between the two countries unfold? Are any of the characters’ lives in danger? Only time will tell…

A Suitable Boy continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One.
