Kyle MacLachlan Admits He Was ‘Angry’ At His Sex & The City Character For This Reason

Fans of Sex and the City know all about the marriage of Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) and Trey MacDougal (Kyle MacLachlan). At first, it seemed like Charlotte had finally found the man of her dreams, but as soon as the couple said “I do,” their relationship switched from a fairy tale to an absolute disaster.

Trey was a handsome, wealthy cardiologist who appeared to worship the ground that Charlotte walked on. But, as soon as they tied the knot, everything changed. Trey’s overbearing mother became a third member of the relationship, there were serious problems in the bedroom, and eventually Trey seemed to not care about Charlotte’s dream of becoming a mom.

MacLachlan’s character on the HBO series went from a Prince Charming to a series villain, and the actor understands why a lot Sex and the City fans didn’t love Trey. In fact, MacLachlin didn’t really like the character, either, and there was one specific reason why.

“I was angry at the character actually,” MacLachlan recently told Page Six. “What’s this cardboard baby? “I asked the writers and they said, ‘Oh, it’s funny,’ so I went, ‘OK, I’m not sure I think so but OK.’”

During Seasons 3 and 4, Charlotte and Trey met and got married, but they immediately had problems conceiving. When he gave his wife a cardboard cutout of a baby as a gift during their fertility struggle, Charlotte got mad and Trey couldn’t understand why. However, MacLachlan completely understood why Charlotte would be angry, and he admitted that Trey had a side that was “a little oblivious to certain things.”

The 61-year-old actor added that fans had every right to be angry with the character, and he was angry, too. Eventually, Trey and Charlotte divorced and she moved on with her divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler), and seemingly got her happily ever after.

Nearly two decades after ending his run on Sex and the City, Kyle MacLachlin is now starring in the film Capone, alongside Tom Hardy. The movie tells the story of the final years of the notorious gangster’s life. Capone is currently streaming on demand.
