Arsenal hero Jens Lehmann has recalled the moment that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger squared up to Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford tunnel.
The Gunners took a vital early step towards their Invincible season in 2003 when they claimed a 0-0 draw at the Theatre of Dreams in just the sixth game of the season,
Ruud van Nistelrooy had the opportunity to grab all three points for United in injury time but he saw his effort from the penalty spot cannon off the crossbar.
That miss, of course, resulted in the now infamous Battle of Old Trafford with all 22 players involved in a brawl on the pitch at the final whistle.
The fight continued into the tunnel, where Ferguson was famously on the end of a thrown pizza from youngster Cesc Fabregas.
However, the Scot’s eventful afternoon didn’t end there according to Lehmann.
The German claims that Ferguson was involved in a bust-up with Wenger in the tunnel, with the Frenchman grappling the Scot in anticipation of a fight.
I remember after that game I wasn’t looking into the eyes of my teammates I was looking into the eyes of Arsene,’ Lehmann told BeIN Sports.
‘He was having Alex Ferguson at a short distance like that [clenches fist].
‘He grabbed him and each of them were very angry with each other and almost started to fight with each other.
‘It wasn’t about me or the players it was more about the manager.
‘I came in late and I remember that there were two crowds of people confront each other and I spilt some of my water onto them, accidentally of course.
‘It was funny to watch, I wasn’t involved. You always expect me to be involved but I wasn’t in this situation.
‘We were talking (on the Monday at the training ground) but we were waiting for fines to be handed out and of course to United.’
