A windstorm accompanied by frigid temperatures attacked the Southland Monday, generating unusually powerful gusts in Los Angeles County that reached 80 miles per hour in the San Gabriel Mountains and causing scattered power outages.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Southern California Edison both reported multiple outages across the county Monday. The DWP estimated the time of restoration at 8 to 10 hours from the start of an outage, while SCE expected most of the power to be restored sometime Monday night.
“This is a particularly strong event,” National Weather Service meteorologist Dave Bruno said.
The winds knocked over a few large trees in residential areas, including one in the 700 block of Fairview Avenue in Sierra Madre. Forecasters with the National Weather Service expect the winds to weaken somewhat Monday night, but they could still reach 50 miles an hour in the mountains.
Meanwhile, forecasters warned of below-freezing temperatures Monday and Tuesday night in the mountains and the Antelope and San Fernando Valleys.
“Hard freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and cause unprotected pipes to burst,” warned the NWS in discussing conditions in the Antelope Valley and other sections of L.A. County.
To guard against the cold, area residents were urged to “take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. Plan for extra time to defrost vehicle windshields.”
The Los Angeles County health officer issued cold-weather alerts due to wind-chill temperatures expected to dip below 32 degrees.
“Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities or special medical needs are especially vulnerable during cold weather. Extra precaution should be taken to ensure they don’t get too cold when they are outside,” Dr. Muntu Davis said. “There are places where people can go to stay warm, such as shelters or other public facilities. We also want to remind people not to use stoves, barbecues or ovens to heat their homes due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.”
