A man who worked for the Department of Homeland Security pleaded no contest Monday to vehicular manslaughter and drunken driving for causing a crash that left a man dead and his wife seriously injured on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in Pomona.
Luis Angel Ureno, 29, entered his plea to one felony count each of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated without gross negligence and driving with a .08% blood alcohol content causing injury, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
He was ordered to return to a downtown courtroom on March 2, when he is expected to be sentenced to three years in prison under a plea deal negotiated with prosecutors.
Ureno was driving at a high rate of speed when he crashed into the back of a vehicle driven by Hector Soltero shortly after midnight on Sept. 18, 2017, prosecutors said. Soltero, 42, was killed, and his wife and passenger, Roxana Pena Beltran, suffered major injuries.
Ureno was an officer with the Department of Homeland Security at the time of the crash.
