Chris Rock Revives The Saw Franchise With New Film Titled Spiral – See The Trailer!

Comedian Chris Rock is bringing the drama, suspense, and horror in his new film Spiral, which will revive the gory Saw franchise. Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures has released the first trailer for the 9th installment of the franchise that features Rock as Detective Ezekiel Banks.

The trailer begins with Detective Banks and his rookie partner Detective William (Max Minghella from The Handmaid’s Tale) driving around talking about William’s wife and child, and Banks tells William to enjoy it while it lasts because there’s “nothin’ happier than the wife of a new detective.”

The two are soon called to the scene of a crime where an officer is down, and this leads to Banks and William investigating a series of gruesome murders. The detectives also get help from a character named Marcus, played by Samuel L. Jackson.

“Whoever did this has another motive,” says Detective Banks. “They’re targeting cops,” as Marcus adds, “This sh*t’s gonna go sideways fast.”

At the scene of each murder, the detectives find a red spiral symbol painted nearby, which fans will recognize as the mark of Jigsaw, the iconic villain of the Saw franchise. And, at one point in the trailer, Rock’s character is chained up in a room and holding a hacksaw, just like Cary Elwes’ character in the original Saw. Fans know all too well how that turned out.

Rock is both the star and executive producer of the film, and he announced last year that he would be reviving the franchise that debuted 16 years ago. Darren Lynn Bousman – who directed Saw II, Saw III, and Saw IV – returned to the director’s chair for Spiral.

“I’ve been a fan of Saw since the first film in 2004. I am excited by the opportunity to take this to a really intense and twisted new place,” Rock told IndieWire.

The horror series released a new film every year between 2004 and 2010, but the 8th film in the franchise titled Jigsaw didn’t come out until 2017. The low-budget Saw titles have grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide at the box office, which includes Jigsaw’s $100 million earnings.

It isn’t clear if Tobin Bell – who played John Kramer, AKA Jigsaw, in the first eight films – will be a part of Spiral. The expectation is that this new movie will feature a new villain who is possibly a Jigsaw disciple.

Spiral: From The Book of Saw will hit theaters nationwide on May 15, 2020.
