A two-year-old boy was brutally beaten to death by his mother’s boyfriend in a car parked at a liquor store, prosecutors said.

Charles Davis, 32, has been charged with the murder of William Meeks II, who died on June 2019 in Long Beach, California.

Authorities say Davis and the William were alone in a car parked at Big John’s liquor store when he started beating the boy.

Investigators originally believed William died after suffering a medical emergency, but the case was ruled a homicide after a medical examiner determined the he died of intentional blunt force trauma to the head.

Davis was arrested on January 19 and pleaded not guilty to murder on Wednesday, according to the Long Beach Post.

The boy’s father said Davis only knew William’s mother for a few weeks. She told police that she was dating Davis.

Deputy District Attorney Colby Cano called the case ‘complicated’ and Davis’s lawyer indicated that there may be more than one suspect in William’s alleged murder.

‘I think there could be one, two maybe three people involved in this child’s death,’ Davis’s attorney said.

On the day of the alleged beating, police responded to the liquor store and found a group gathered around the boy.

A bystander was reportedly holding William and trying to revive him, according to police.

The day before the trial, William’s aunt Victorya Meeks posted a heartfelt tribute on an online memorial for the boy.

She wrote: ‘Tomorrow will be a hard day for us all,’ then wrote directly to William.
