Suspected Car Burglar Shot Dead By Homeowner in Anaheim

A suspected car burglar was shot and killed Saturday in Anaheim by a homeowner who told police he spotted the man on a security camera trying to break into his vehicle, according to Anaheim police.

Malik Mustafa Schwiat, 20, of Anaheim was pronounced dead at a hospital, police said.

The shooting took place about 2:30 a.m. in the 800 block of South Westchester Drive, police said.

Responding officers learned the unidentified homeowner went outside to confront the suspected burglar. It’s unclear what led to the subsequent shooting.

Homicide detectives were investigating the shooting and the homeowner reportedly was cooperating with police. So far, the homeowner has not been arrested, police said.

The detectives were also trying to identify a second suspect with Schwiat at the time of the shooting, police said.
